Thursday 8th June 1961
Tonight was the night of the signalling competition and the team - T.L. Alistair Cram, P.L. Ian Fraser, Seconds Ronald Russell and Michael Nisbet, met at H.Q. at 7.00 hrs. when we were told to go up to the Lyle Road. Three Troops were competing, the 45th and the 5th being the other teams. As the 45th were doing Morse, the 5th and the 70th signaled first in semaphore. Two messages were sent (see below). Then the 45th did their Morse.
Results were as follows:-
1) 70th Renfrewshire 100%
2) 5th Renfrewshire 94%
3) 45th Renfrewshire 78%
The examiner was Captain Ian Pearson. The shield was not presented to us as it was being cleaned.
Scribe: Alistair B. Cram (T.L.)
First message sent by Michael Nisbet (Sender) and Ian Fraser
‘Semaphore signaling is a very convenient mode of communication between vessels or persons close enough to discern the signals clearly’
Second message sent by Alistair Cram (Sender) and Ronald Russell.
‘When double letters occur in a word after the first of the double letters is made the arms are dropped to the break position and then without a pause moved to the second letter’
